Business plan & business model canvas

The business plan describes the business idea as the central planning tool for starting a company. And that including the goals and strategies of the company with the basic requirements, projects and measures for a certain time frame.

For founders, the business plan is a good overview and a valuable guideline in the start-up phase. It serves as a basis for decision-making by potential investors, donors and financial institutions as to whether or not they want to support the company.

Strategic guideline for every start-up

The classic business plan consists of two parts.

The first part describes the business idea with the following components:

  • Strategy: How should the business idea work?
  • Target group: Who is the business idea aimed at?
  • Marketing & Sales: How do customers become aware of you?
  • Opportunities and risks analysis: where are the opportunities and risks of your company Determination via the SWOT analysis  www.foerderland.de/gruendung/swot-analyse/

The 2nd part of the business plan concerns financial planning:

  • capital requirements
  • Financing plan
  • collateral
  • Liquidity plan

The business plan is a clear guideline for management and employees and contains the company's goals and strategies. It is the tool to keep a constant eye on the development of the company, to recognize bottlenecks at an early stage, to be able to make a target / actual comparison at any time and to think through and question your own ideas.

Business Model Canvas

A current alternative

The basis of the Business Model Canvas (BMC) is an overview with several fields, each of which is labeled with the key factors for a business model. The aim of this method is to visualize innovative business models and a startup idea, to further develop and revise them.

The idea was developed in 2008 by the Swiss entrepreneur and lecturer Alexander Osterwalder.

The Business Model Canvas can be used both analog and digital: ideas are noted down in key words for each key factor. This visually clear procedure allows the individual aspects and requirements to be related to one another. The new building blocks that are assigned to the Business Model Canvas lead to a uniform language that can be used to describe business models, even in interdisciplinary groups, in order to create new strategic alternatives or to further develop business models.

In contrast to the business plan, the business model canvas can be individually designed and updated on a daily basis.
